Although 10 percent of reproductive-age women live with endometriosis, a chronic disease in which endometrial-like tissue grows outside the uterus onto other organs, it can take as many as 10 years, on average, from onset of symptoms until a correct diagnosis is received. Endometriosis also costs an estimated $69.4 billion per year in healthcare expenditures in the United States. These are some of the facts presented in a "Call for Attention” paper published online in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology on February 18.
